dc.description.abstract Marine species such as pathogens, bacteria and algae are transferred to other oceans in an exchange process of ship's ballast water. The transferred species can cause contamination of sea water and destruction of marine ecology. The International Maritime Organization(IMO) has adopted the convention on ballast water management that all ships should equip with a water treatment system from Jan. 1, 2010. With this background, this thesis dealt with the design and fabrication of a Ballast Water Treatment System(BWTS) by Ultra Violet(UV) technology which has high disinfection efficacy and stability to be operated on ships. A high pressure UV lamp of 3.5[kW] and magnetic-type ballast were fabricated. Compared to other products with the same capacity, the UV intensity and the Total Harmonic Distortion(THD) of the lamp were improved by 12.6[%] and 15[%], respectively. The prototype BWTS is composed of 4-3.5[kW] UV lamp and can treat ballast water at a flow rate of 50[m3/h]. From the biological test according to IMO rules, the disinfection efficacy of the prototype BWTS was estimated 99.99[%]. -
