Abstract
ECDIS is an essential navigation equipment for the safe navigation and the enhancement of work efficiency. Vessels subject to SOLAS regulations engaged in international navigation were completed to be equipped with ECDIS by July 1, 2018.

This study is focused on development of ECDIS training modules for optimal navigation.

An analysis of recent major accident cases related to ECDIS confirmed that similar accidents continue to occur due to human factors such as lack of familiarization with ECDIS, the same as the causes of reported accidents from 2007 to 2013. An analysis of the ECDIS-related deficiencies of PSC and OIL MAJOR inspection identified defects in various categories, including insufficient SMS procedures, insufficient ECDIS equipment and training certificates and equipment defects as well as lack of user familiarization.
ECDIS has many changes in functionality due to updates such as PL Ed.4.0, IEC 61174 Ed.4.0, etc. However, there are many navigators who have completed the ECDIS Generic training before the latest regulations are applied. Since ECDIS Generic training is the first one-time mandatory training, the navigators have fewer opportunities to complete training that reflects the latest regulations and functions.

The above information confirmed the need for the latest on-site-oriented ECDIS training. Three training modules and shipboard training procedures were designed to improve the ECDIS site adaptability of the navigators.
First, a two-day course was designed for ECDIS field-oriented core education modules. It consists of essential elements that all users must understand, regardless of the rank.
Second, simulation training module and scenarios were designed. During the simulation, it was designed to develop the ability of trainees to experience emergency situations and respond to them by creating various situations that can be dangerous on ships such as GPS Fail.
Third, a life cycle education module was designed for navigators. Customized education modules for each position were proposed in consideration of the task characteristics of each rank of master, chief officer, 2nd, 3rd officer and pilot.
Forth, Shipboard training procedures were designed to maximize the effectiveness and continuity of ECDIS education, achieve practical application on ship.

Finally, the expected performance of the ECDIS site-oriented core education module was conducted on 60 current masters and navigators. The survey results indicated the need for this training.
