Abstract
The metal halide lamps popularly used to attract fish are actually inefficient as a light source due to its omni-directional characteristic because they use only 3[%] of the total velocity of light that may be used to attract fishes. The LED’s of the directional light source, however, are able to minimize the optical loss upon effectively penetrating the water. Also, the use of the LED’s, which give out a color that is truly attractive to the target fishes, lowers power consumption.

This paper proposes the development and substantiation of an energy-saving light emitting diode (LED) fishing lamp as substitute for the metal halide lamp.

To develop this LED fishing lamp, this paper studied how to effectively penetrate deep seawater and understand how a squid reacts to light wavelengths. The experiment showed that both characteristics existed in blue color around 455∼490 [nm]. The LED fishing lamp has four unit modules, which has 18(3×6) Blue LED’s with a 470[nm] peak and FWHM 30[nm]. The 1.5[kg] LED fishing lamp was designed with power consumption of 160[W], luminous intensity of 625 [cd] and radiation angle of 45[°]. Also, upon predicting the thermal distribution of the unit module through a thermal analysis program, water cooling method was applied on the LED fishing lamp in order to determine its utility factor and life span. A prototype LED lamp is being used and field-tested on two squid jigging ships. The LED lamps proved to effectively and deeply penetrate water and reduced the ship’s appearance as an enemy, could scare away the target fishes. Total power consumption of the fishing lamps on the jigging ship was 144[kWh] including ballast loss, and these can be replaced to 100-160 [W] LED fishing lamps, 16[kWh]. Consequently, the use of LED fishing lamp for the jigging ship reduces power consumption to 128 [kWh] which is corresponded to CO2 of 86[kg].
