dc.description.abstract Normally, it is applied simple single propulsion system to merchant vessels, electric propulsion system to offshore vessels and combined propulsion system to navy vessels. In this paper, the operational concept of three kinds of vessels through materials of operation is analysed to figure out the relations between the operation concept and the propulsion system design, and the efficient method for selection and design of the propulsion system is investigated. As a result, it is recognized that merchant vessels have the simple single propulsion system to keep economical efficiency, offshore vessels have the electric propulsion system to get high dynamic positioning performance and navy vessels have the combined propulsion system for maximizing operational capability through light weight and compact size. Consequently, the selection and design of propulsion system should be taken by exact analysis of operational concept for vessels. -
