First, according to performance test on recovery efficiency with Bunker-C, drum-type skimmer with streamline blade shows to increase the efficiency by more than 35% comparing with that of conventional drum skimmer.
Second, it turns out by tests that the fork crane-type new developed drum skimmer is able to recover even very viscous oil which can't be recovered by conventional skimmer, moreover it can recover emulsified oils as well as super-low viscosity oil.
Third, new developed skimmer is proven to be more superior to imported skimmer in performance of oil recovery.
Finally it is planned that further study will be continued to develop more advanced skimmer with self-driving device.
As the demand of petroleum has been getting higher and the transportation of crude oil carriers have been increasing, large oil spill incidents have occurred at sea, especially near the coastal areas of developed countries since Tanker "Torrey Canyon"spill in 1967. Korea also has experiences of large spills along the coastal waters such as Tanker "Sea Prince" and "Heibei Spirit". On the spill site, most countries, including Korea, put priority on On-water mechanical recovery of many response options using booms and skimmers to minimize the effect of spilled oils. In the meantime, there are several kinds of skimmers to recover oil, of which drum-type skimmer would be often used. However, drum skimmer is known to has some limitation to recover viscous oil. In this regards, the development of high efficiency drum type skimmer with streamline blade is attempted to greatly enhance the on-water recovery rate of the viscous oil at the spill site in this study along with supporting investigations regarding typical characteristics of conventional skimmers, and efficiency-comparison between domestic and imported disc skimmers. The results of study is summarized as follows
