The Shipping companies have been using different managerial strategies to survive through competitive ages. This study analyzes network of regular liner’s sea route. A ports’ success varies influenced majorly by the countries’ economical growth. However, ports are also chosen by the shipping companies for their convenience. Therefore, ports need to be assessed in network point of view.
By analyzing shipping company’s route network, the study assess the centrality of the port. It allows ports’ competitive edge to be re-evaluated, enabling shipping companies to come up with new strategies. This study assessed significance of marine transport and its characteristics and differences of one another. Also it examines previous studies regarding competitional relationship between centrally located ports and alliances of shipping companies.
C.I (Containerization International) Year-Book’s data of year 2010 and 2011 was used to analyze shipping companies sea route network. Top 10 shipping companies’ frequently used port and it’s pattern was empirically analyzed and structural characteristics and centrality is evaluated using SNA. Based on the data, DEA analysis was performed to valuate the efficiency and network of the ports.
Significance of this research is that it performed analysis of network of alliances’ relationship to re-evaluate ports centrality. Also, social network analysis of marine transport industry was not previously been studied thoroughly that it will be useful preliminary research in the future.
