Abstract

This study is for examining the changes of port city Qingdao in China which was occupied by Germany, and classifying the transformation aspects of the city, comparing and analyzing the city and then trying to show the course of development in the future.

To do this, starting from the primitive phase of the city, we analyzed the urban plan in Germany occupied period and Japan occupied period, examined the changeable aspects of major city planning and analyzed the transformation process. In the specific classification of the periods, we would like to analyze it dividing into four stages as followings: the initial stage is the period from 1897 to 1914 when the city was to be colonized by Germany and opened a port and enforced urban plan in the modern concept, the secondary stage is the perion from 1914 to 1949 when Japan declared war against Germany and won the war, the city was to be colonized by Japan, the third stage is the period from 1949 to 1977 when executed a city planning in the nation’s foundation of People’s Republic of China, the forth stage is the period from 1977 to 2010 when the law of city planning amended and started the modern city planning.

We have examined the history of the city Qingdao through various documentary survey and the analysis of antique map for analyzing the transition process from city forming stage, analyzed the roles which the city has executed in the past.

Therefore, it is necessary for some functions of the city to be moved toward surrounding towns to create some more spaces for the unique provincial culture of the city, to enhance urban comfort and satisfaction of people’s housing environment, to enlarge waterfront as a port city anyone can take advantage of.

This is one of sustainable developments and will improve a quality of life. Qingdao city, with this endeavor, will be a balanced and developed city, a considering life-cycle city, sustainable city, a marine cultured city, environmentally and friendly city, ultimately, it will be developed city for all citizens.

This study has a significance to suggest the direction for development of the city planning with comparative analysis of changes of city planning from Qingdao city forming stage in the beginning for the basic research of the city planing of port city Qingdao in China. Thus, there is a limit to figure out specific problems by type for Qingdao city planning or draw a guideline of city planning. The study for the guideline by type or more objective and specific guideline for location is needed to execute city planning.
