Abstract

This thesis was started by the wonder why exterior envelope of building had been considered important and how it had affected contemporary architecture. In order to answer this question, meaning, vaule and examples of expression and category of active exterior envelope which contains liquidity of movement and time was examined.

exterior envelope of contemporary architecture has made rapid progress and passed the steps of analogue. Develpoment of tecnology and change of material property causes visual ambiguity about cognition of exterior envelope. Architects' sense of expression and intention of how deeply make it sensible and how long make it rememberable is shown on this change. exterior envelope is important because it is the way to express identity of building and communicate with others.

exterior envelope of commercial building visibly shows the charicteristic of active_exterior envelope in terms of interaction between architecture and modern city. Commercial builing communicates with consumers by giving visual shock of geometric image change. Commercial building, which complex medium and trend is reflected on, also iconise and symbolise itself. This property of building produces image of city and forms new landscape. Progress of technology leads development of urban centre and becomes tonic of city with its decorational facts. active_exterior envelope, as a trend, presents possibility of contemporary architecture through various key word. Revitalizing exterior envelope reflects and delivers property of present age so that it takes a roll as a representer of modern society.

It is not only study on decoration and form of exterior envelope but also outer profundity which is out of spacial ambiguity or continuity. This thesis, which was started from question of exterior envelope of architecture, developed architectural stream in changing landscape of city by analising various debates and examples. exterior envelope was defined as communication with various medium and artistic expression in this thesis. A type of exterior envelope is so changable by the way of expression that it contains various possibilities. Therefore exterior envelope becomes territory which contains architect's will to express the beauty and react to development of design, technology, material and constructional skill. In diversified and undefined modern city space, expression of morphological diversity will be focused on and value of its meaning and valuse will continue.
