Abstract
Despite steady increases in global demand for repair or maintenance of vessels(ROV), ROV in Busan is mostly operated by small companies where they are not able to respond systematically to the global market.
ROV’s external environment change brings competitive advantages to enterprises sustainably providing differentiated services. Furthermore, in other industries, there is a growing perception that integration of companies’ supply chain is an essential factor for securing competitive benefits.
Consequently, ROV needs special study approaches that take into account mutual causality through supply chain integration to measure corporate performance in an uncertain environment.
In response, this study conducted a survey for ROV companies in Busan with the aim of analyzing the impact of uncertain environments on the supply chain integration and business performance. The questionnaire collected 246 copies and used 186 data for analysis.
Aggregating prior studies, we established variables as environmental uncertainty and supply chain integration by using causal structure model. We analyzed the direct and mediated effects between variables using AMOS and SPSS tools by setting up SEM(Structural Equation Modeling).
The result of the analysis demonstrates that all models are acceptable fit, and a summary of the hypothesis test result is as follows.
First, although the factors of environmental uncertainty show a significant effect on organizational integration of supply chain, in strategic integration, hostility and mobility have no significant influence.
Second, it has been shown that the factors of environmental uncertainty composed of hostility, complexity, and mobility have significant effects.
Third, the organizational and strategic integration of supply chains seems to have a significant impact on the financial performance of the operations.
Fourth, even though all factors of environmental uncertainty seem to impact on enterprise performance, adversarial and complexity factors, like direct effects, are not significant in the area where strategy integration is mediated.
The result of hypothesis verification has presented that it was rejected only by hostile and mobility factors to environmental uncertainty in strategic integration. However, according to precedent research, “The strategic integration of supply chains has established integration strategies among supply chain members which have positive impacts on the improvement of corporate performance, such as customer services, markets, and financial performance.(Cho, 2009)”
Therefore, in order to strengthen the competitiveness of the ROV industry in an uncertain environment, not only corporate performance through the integration of strategies but also social performance is necessary. In this study, political support was presented to strengthen the integration of strategies as follows.
First, it is necessary to support the establishment of a general-purpose information system in the ROV industry for integrated and strategic decision making between entities. The political support is critical for the development of the comprehensive information system that provides flexible aid and enables strategic decision making between firms by digitalizing all information of ship repairing process to ultimately enhance ship repairing quality and industry competitiveness.
Second, the support for establishing space is necessary for ship-repairing enterprises to cooperate. The changes of international ship-repairing regulations and rules will serve as a momentum for the medium and large-sized ship reshuffling market to further expand. Accordingly, the space securement will be of paramount importance.
