Abstract
Modern torpedoes continue to develop and show dramatic improvements in performance of detection and tracking capabilities, speed and range. Recently, naval ships cannot evade torpedoes with simple evasive maneuvers as in the past. Therefore, Navy has been developing and operating various Torpedo Defense systems.
In accordance with the development of torpedoes, the Torpedo Defense systems are also undergoing technological progress. The Torpedo Counter Measure, which is the representative weapon system of the Torpedo Defense system, is the last resort to secure the survivability of the submarine from the enemy's torpedo attack. Advanced countries in submarine operation are developing and operating high-performance Torpedo Counter Measure system. The ROK Navy also has developed and operated a floating Torpedo Counter Measure and a self-propelled Torpedo Counter Measure. However, as neighboring countries are developing various underwater weapons and the performance of torpedoes is progressing, a more advanced Torpedo Counter Measure system is required.
In this study, the global development trend of torpedoes and Torpedo Counter Measure system is examined. This thesis showed the current situation of the Korean Navy and focused on the development direction of Torpedo Counter Measure systems to be pursued in the future for the ROK Navy.
