International Maritime Organization has adopted AIS using TDMA technology to protect the collision between vessels. The provision has been approved the availability of frequency resource and the effect of protection against collision as capable of communication between maximum 4,000 radio station even it is used only two restricted frequencies. So far, a lot of applications using AIS technology have being introduced.
AIS performance standards for a vessel have been prepared by IMO MSC74(69) Annex 3 at 2001, June and since even the vessels engaged in coastal and inshore navigation shall also carry on a self-position transmitting device such as Class A and Class B AIS according to the ship safety law as domestic regulation.
Class B “CS” AIS is a representative device to report a vessel position and in near future it will be expanded and come into wide use.
Through this thesis, AIS protocols of CSTDMA method based on ITU-R M.1371-3 has been implemented and Class B type hardware has been designed to install and operate in a small vessel. In addition, the considering about operation requirements, test methods, required results based on the IEC62287 have been done.
Class B type AIS device using CSTDMA method is capable of cooperation with not only the class A AIS installed in the vessels engaged in international navigation but also inter-operation with an aids to navigation(AtoN) AIS having a lot of communication traffic and be on a rapid growth trend.
According to using an ASIC chip and no necessary to provide a DSC receiver independently, Class B type “CS” AIS device will be most economical AIS device in small vessel and CSTDMA method will be a optimized solutions to share the restricted communication slots
