Abstract
The major inspection is a ship inspection for tankers executed by Major oil companies and it is differed from other ship inspections in terms of being taken by ship owners voluntarily. To take the Major's cargo, tanker owners should get approvals from Major oil companies through the major inspection. Thus, it is very important for ship owners to pass the major inspection because it is closely related to the business profits of shipping company.

In this study, author tried to understand the present status and problems concerned with the execution of major inspection and suggest the improving measures for them. To do this, author took a questionary survey and interview with interested parties, such as crew members, persons in charge of shipping company and inspectors, as well as studied the related literature. The results of study are as follows.

Firstly, the Major inspection, which is executed individually by Majors, has to be unified and the unified inspection should be controlled by OCIMF, which is cooperated by Majors.

Secondly, to reduce the excessive load of crew members and persons in charge of shipping company as well as to secure the safe cargo works on board, the period of inspection should be adjusted.

Thirdly, to change the mind of crew members and chief executive officer of shipping company for Major inspection, a continuous training for crew members should be performed while an importance of active response for chief executive officer should be noted.

Fourthly, to remove the mis-understanding among interested parties, concerned people, specially crew members should be acquainted with the related international regulations as well as improve the ability for speaking english and conversation skills.

Lastly, to reduce the expenses for Major inspection, inspection procedure should be simplified as well as common standards for inspection and ship's equipments be established.

For topics of further study concerned with this study, there should be the development of systematic responding system to Major inspection for shipping company and crew members and the development of detailed unification program under OCIMF for individual Major inspections.
