Lately while discussion on remodeling of conventional pier of North port has had a very vigorous argument, indispensability for redevelopment of Jasungdae pier(Hutchson Port Holdings: HPH) is also presented. This terminal and piers have been the driving force for development of Busan, but it has brought urban problems such as traffic problem, environmental pollution, etc.
Under this circumstance, renewal of Jasungdae terminal is suggested as an alternative plan for urban redevelopment. This renewal plan for HPH has been triggered as development of Busan New Port is actively expanded in accordance with transfer of the vast amount of cargo from North Port to New Port. This cargo comes from big sized shipping companies, Hanjin and Hyundai, which will change their port of call from North Port to New Port because these two shipping companies are authorized to be private businesses.
Therefore, with the opening of New Port the function of North Port should be rearranged to uplift the effectiveness of operation of Busan Port and to reinvigorate the urban function. It ought to be succeeded by reorganization of North Port and redevelopment of Jasungdae(HPH) terminal.
Busan Port should accomplish its competitiveness and the restoration of urban economy through two axis
the center of logistics by developing New Port and the heart of the marine tourism and culture by redeveloping North Port. Accordingly casting the topic of redevelopment of Jasungdae terminal, this thesis suggests the year of the commencement, the idea of remodeling function, the business efficiency and the ripple effect. It is expecting that this argument would be the detonator of lively debate of renewal of Jasungdae pier.
Recently the special law directly regulating port redevelopment is being enacted to solve an urgent problem. However, the realistic bottlenecks such as the supply of initial working expenses, the method of business propulsion, high expectation of waterfront by civil society, etc are expected in near future. A more positive effort of the government, the local autonomous administration(Busan city), BPA(Busan Port Authority: BPA), port operation company, and citizens of Busan is needed.
