Currently, the activation of the air-marine multimodal transportation, which combines the economy of the marine and the immediacy of aviation, is required to meet the business needs of cost reduction and distribution in time in the international logistics industry. However, the air-marine multimodal transportation has not been activated in the port of Busan where the traffic of air transportation is slight in comparison with the one of the marine, the top 5 in the world.
In order that Busan develops itself to the logistics hub in Northeast Asia in the future, it should create the demand of the air-marine multimodal transportation by the link between air and marine with the port as the center, and increase the traffic of the logistics complex in New Port and activate the air-marine multimodal transportation to distribute its goods effectively.
This study tried to suggest systematically the ways to activate the air-marine multimodal transportation for the sake of the port of Busan, and seek the approaches to vitalize that transportation by understanding obstacles and problems of the multimodal transportation.
It adopted the port logistics business model suited for the air-marine multimodal transportation business model by examining precedent studies about the business model for the port logistics complex and that model for airport one. There are four type models, the quick distribution, the value added, the market expansion, and the service promotion, in those studies.
This study developed the business model of the air-marine multimodal transportation through these types, analyzed the cases, and suggested the business model for the port of Busan.
According to the findings, because the most serious barrier in the multimodal transportation of Busan is the small size of airstrip, it is impossible to invite A380, the large passenger plane, or B747-400, large cargo plane. Besides, there are many obstacles that Gimhae airport has. Those are small terminal, no operating 24 hours due to the military operation, the lack of cvirdination between relevant organizations, and the scarcity of professional air-marine multimodal transporting firms. In order to solve these problems, this study suggested several approaches including the tnfrastrugeure of new airport, the ltnk between the airport and logistics complex for the creation of value added, the construgeion of professional center, the attrageion of multinational corporations' logistics center, the promotion of professional multimodal transporting firms, and so on.
And yet, the most important prerequisite is the infra-construction of the new airport near Busan in order to develop and activate the air-marine multimodal transportation in Busan. In 2006, the government planned the southeastern new airport, and citizenry, industry, and academia in Busan have been buoyant with anticipation. However, the plan was scrapped because of the relevant local governments' keen competition in March 2011.
The government ought to aware and recognized the significance of international multimodal logistics on the changes of global logistics environment. Logistics is war in the era of modern. Many countries around world are investing heavily in logistics infrastructure as ports, airports, and complex to secure the cargo volume. The status of Busan, top five of handling cargo in the world, might descend in the long-term range because China has invested considerably in logistics infra in accordance with the economic development,
For that reason, the southeastern new airport around Busan or Gyeonhnam will be built in the near future. In spite of the fact that Busan has the geographic merits and the knowhow of handling cargo as the main logistics city, it lags behind other areas in the international multimodal transportation. The purpose and meaning of this study is to confirm the approaches to develop and activate Busan logistics through the link among the port, airport, and logistics complex.
In conclusion, the result of this study will contribute to create new traffic and high value added cargo by connection of the port, new airport and logistics complex in Busan.
