Abstract
Compact heat exchangers are considered as a plausible candidate for heat transfer between the high pressure, high temperature gas flows such as in the intermediate heat exchanger of Very High Temperature Nuclear Reactor (VHTR) for hydrogen production. Such a compact heat exchanger is constructed with corrugated minichannels of millimeter-range hydraulic diameter.

In the present study, heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of high temperature, high pressure helium flow in minichannels have been numerically investigated using the FLUENT code. A particular emphasis in the analysis was to evaluate the applicability of the turbulent models in the code to such high pressure, high temperature flow (60 bar, 950℃).

Some selected experimental data were compared with the calculations. The FLUENT code generally overpredicted the heat transfer coefficients and the difference was larger in low Reynolds number flow.

The effect of variable properties was also investigated. Heat transfer and fluid flow in the corrugated (zigzag) channels were numerically analysed to seek optimum angle of corrugation.
