Abstract
In recent days, container throughput has been continuously increased due to the world's economic growth and the expanding trade volume as a result of globalization. Additionally, in the course of pursuing the effectiveness in the transporting system. the role of the transshipment at port has become more significant. And for the purpose of cutting down operating cost, the average size of ships continues to grow over time.

Each country is developing port facilities, fighting to win the competition for hub port position of the transshipment. Also the terminal operators seek to achieve their demands.

This research investigated the factors which affect the liner's selection of transshipment port and their relative importance by questioning those responsible in the business. The result was throughly examined using the Analytic Hierarchy Process. Based on the findings, the four ports- Busan, Kwangyang, Shanghai, Ninbo - all situated in the North East Asia - were compared which are considered as potential rivals in future.

The followings are the crucial factors a liner considers when faced with the transshipment port selection.

To begin, it appears that the external factors are far more influencive than the internal ones. This is to say that, in reality, the effects upon the transshipment selection by the port authority or terminal operating company are limited to a certain extent.

Secondly, amongst the external factors of the port, export/import throughput is considered the most vital, followed by the distance from the trunk route, annual operating days and then the distance from the feeder port. And the order in the internal factors of the port is the costs, the productivity, the feeder network and the facilities.

Finally, when these major ports have been compared based on the derived relative importances of the factorts, Busan resulted to be the most competitive transshipment port, then followed by Shanghai, Kwangyang and Ningbo.
