Abstract
Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in portable electronics and electric vehicles as energy storage media due to the high energy density and excellent cycle stability. However the resources of lithium for mining are limited and prices are steadily rising due to uneven distributions around the world. Furthermore the consumption of lithium is expected to increase faster with the recent demand for large-scale fixed-type energy storage system. Therefore the development of next-generation energy storage devices is greatly required.
Sodium secondary batteries are expected to be future energy storage devices because they are inexpensive and have operating principles similar to lithium-ion batteries. However, due to the low first cycle coulombic efficiency and the limitations of the carbon material itself, it is still unsatisfactory in terms of electrochemical performance. This is because sodium has an ionic radius larger than lithium, which slows the diffusion to electrode material, and is thermo-dynamically unstable when forming compounds with griphite, resulting in only small amount of insertion into the graphene layer. Thus, the reversible capacity of the sodium ion cell is determined by adsorption onto the surface of graphite, with ions stored in void space in disorder region rather than insertion. Therefore, developing suitable electrode materials that allow for high energy density, reversibility and rapid ion insertion/extraction is essential.
In this work, we aimed to improve the electrochemical performance of carbon materials by co-doping heteroatoms such as nitrogen and sulfur within the carbon matrix. The synthesized material has an amorphous structure with nitrogen and sulfur doping 4.0 wt.% and 7.0 wt.%, respectively. Not only sulfur doping increased the reversible capacity by widening the distance between the carbon layers, but it also caused a reversible reaction with sodium ions, showing additional reversible capacity increase as cycling progresses. In addition, doped nitrogen increases the electrical conductivity and forms pores on the carbon surface and inside to maximize strorage capacity.
The synthesized anode material achieved a reversible capacity of more than 300 mAh/g at a current density of 1 A/g. and it showed a reversible capacity of more than 72 mAh/g at an ultra-high current density of 100 A/g, showing excellent lifetime of more than 35,000 cycles.
Moreover, the synthesized material was successfully applied on the seawater battery anode and evaluated the electrochemical performances at 10 A/g for the first time. It showed more than 1,500 cycles with reversible capacity above 150 mAh/g. This result implies that the N S co-doped carbon has a huge potential as an anode material for practical use of seawater batteries.
