- After enduring a severe depression of world economy started in the end of 2008, the impact of the global financial crisis was also felt in the container shipping market. The buoyant growth of the previous twenty years ended abruptly in 2008, and the industry, which ordered new capacity before the crisis faces over-capacity in its market for some years to come, with the inevitable impact on profitability. Shipping benefits from globalization more than almost any other sector. But this has also made it more vulnerable to the global economic crisis. As such, liner shipping companies as one of the International Transportation Company are also facing the approaching problem of a glut of shipping capacity from vessels ordered during the boom years.
The demand of shipping begins through the trade activity between buyer and seller in the world. Therefore, the globalization of world trade made shipping companies can not ignore the foreign market. Based on this background of the relationship between world economy and shipping industry, the purpose of this study targeted on how liner shipping companies set up a strategy to face the challenge of world economy.
This study aims at the global strategy of liner shipping company for changing international shipping environment. Firstly, in this study explained the concept and characteristic of global shipping market environment. Secondly, looks into a review of literature in global strategy and the reason why a international transportation company should provide their service globally. Thirdly, using the comparative analysis of global strategy of liner shipping companies in Korea, Japan, China, Europe, and Taiwan.
In conclusion, the study seeks to contribute to the future global strategy of the liner shipping companies in Taiwan through case studies of major shipping companies of top 20 in shipping market.
