- The basic function of ports as the critical junctions between ocean and inland transportation is to transfer cargoes between inland transportation, coastal transportation, and oceangoing ships. Today, about 90% of all international trade has been passed via ports, and due to this large volumes, the impact of port is deeply related to the economic potential of the region or country.
For these reasons, currently, the port logistics industry in Busan has been recognized as one of the most important industries. Many studies on the relationship between the effects of port logistics and Busan economy have been conducted. However, in the most existing studies on the relationship between Busan port and regional economy, the characteristic of Busan container flow have been little considered. Thus, it is necessary to identify Busan container flow based on the actual analysis and investigation of Busan port
The aim of this study is to analyze the characteristics of container flow in Busan port, and in the respect of regional economy, to identify container flows of Busan port according to the subfunctions of port logistics.
From the analysis of this study, it were founded that Busan port treats little Busan cargoes and thus the logistics subfunctions performed in Busan are very limited. And, according to the container flow including the case of passing via ODCY or direct passing, export or import, and full or empty container, it was founded that the characteristics of all local areas related to import and export container volumes via Busan port by truck were different.
Also, in the respect of regional economy, CFS handling cargo in terminal, container cargo via ODCY, container cargo via Yangsan ICD, and Busan Container cargo were deeply related to Busan economy. Especially, from the data analysis, it has been founded that there were some differences of characteristics between container flow via ODCY and container flow via Yangsan ICD.
